At the southern foot of the Alps, between its rocky toes, lies Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, a 30–mile–long fjord scoured through the rock by the last of the Ice Age glaciers, a watery cleft so deep you could sink the Eiffel Tower and still have room to scuba dive on top. This is Alpine country with a gentle Mediterranean climate, a soaring landscape ripe with olive and lemon groves, palms, cypresses, oleanders and orange trees.

You will be staying on a half board basis in one of the loveliest resorts on the lake, Malcesine, with its delightful squares and cobbled streets. The promenade from the town's southern end leads past shingle beaches to the picturesque Val di Sogno, a superb spot for lake bathing and water sports, and there are ferry connections with Riva, Limone, and other lake resorts. Lake Garda's highest mountain, 1750m Monte Baldo, overlooks the town and a cable car with rotating cabins can take you almost to the summit. If you want to go all the way, the highest point can be reached by walking a few kilometres further along the ridge to the south. The prominent castle (Castello Scaligero) is well worth a visit, and nearby is the village of Cassone where you will find the River Aril, the shortest river in the world - a mighty 175 metres long!

Included in the price of your holiday is an evening excursion to the Bardolino Wine Festival. The Festival, now in its 88th year, caters for all palates and in particular celebrates the award–winning local Bardolino wine, a light, fruity red or rosé made from Corvina and Rondinella grapes and a favourite with light dishes and salads. Wine is served by the glass and is very moderately priced at €1 – €2. A cultural programme runs alongside the wine–tasting and varies from year to year but includes a variety of musical and artistic entertainment.

Saturday   Check in at your departure airport for your flight to Verona. On arrival, you will be met by an English–speaking representative and transferred to Lake Garda by coach. There may be a short wait at the airport for passengers arriving on the other flight. Once you have checked in at your hotel, the rest of the day is free to relax, unwind, and enjoy your first dinner.

Sunday   At some point on Sunday there will be a welcome meeting where our resort representative will take bookings for any excursions you wish to take during your week on Lake Garda. Excursions are subject to minimum numbers. In the early evening the coach will arrive to take you to Bardolino for the Wine Festival, and return you back to the hotel afterwards. As you will miss normal dinner service, you will be given either lunch or an early dinner at the hotel.

Wine Tour

Half Day
- approx €43pp

Wine tour A half–day excursion to learn about the traditions of the wine–producing areas around Lake Garda. The vineyard you visit will depend on the location of your resort, but each tour will include at least three glasses of wine and nibbles plus an insight into the wine–making techniques and methods used by that particular producer. All in all, an educational but fun afternoon!
Lake Garda Tour

Full Day
- approx €45pp

Lake Garda has extremely varied scenery from a Mediterranean landscape and vast plains in the south, to dramatic cliffs and a more Austrian heritage in the north, and a colourful and interesting history. Your coach will visit a selection of lakeside towns with their monuments dating back to Roman, Venetian, Scaliger and Austrian reigns and empires. Part of the tour includes a ferry boat crossing of the lake. The tour order and crossing point will vary depending on your departure location.
Venice

Full Day
- approx €72pp

Typically lauded as one of those 'must see' places, the first thing you realise about Venice is that whatever you've seen or heard about it, nothing was an exaggeration. There is simply nowhere else remotely like it. Gondola rides, art galleries and famous landmarks like the Rialto, the Basilica, the Doges' Palace and pigeon–populated St Mark's Square are the obvious things to see and do, but don't overlook the churches. Every time the plague swept through Venice the thankful survivors struck up a new church, each as awe–inspiring on the inside as the outside, and especially of note is the Santa Maria della Salute, guarding the entrance of the Grand Canal, marbled throughout and with a clutch of old masters by Tintoretto.
Please note: Most bridges have steps and some areas may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.
Verona

Full Day
- approx €40pp

A small city with a giant history, Verona has Roman ruins and excavations everywhere you go, even in cutaway sections underneath the streets and buildings which make you feel like you're walking in two worlds at the same time. It also has one of the most complete Roman amphitheatres in the world, lit up at night for open air Verdi operas and other shows. But there is another reason for holding Verona dear. It is, of course, the home of the Montagues and Capulets; Romeo and Juliet; the doomed lovers of Shakespeare's quill. No–one knows for sure if they really existed, but in Verona's Via Capello sits the Casa Cappelletti (Capulet?), with a tiny, shaded courtyard overlooked by a small balcony...
Our excursion includes a tour of the sights by coach and a walking tour through the historical centre, including the Roman amphitheatre.
